National Geographic's 2016 Nature Photographer of the Year Contest was bigger and better than ever. The annual contest is an esteemed competition in which thousands of photographers from all over the world participate to showcase their work.

This year too, photographers competed across four categories (Animal Portraits, Landscape, Action and Environment Issues). These represent the best of the best in the world of nature photography.

1.Grand Prize winner – Sardine Run by G. Lecoeur (Action)

Natural predation, sardines are preyed upon by cape gannet birds and common dolphins.

2. Struggle of Life by Jacob Kaptein (Landscape)

A little beech in the water, trying to survive under harsh conditions.

3. Life and Death by Vadim Balakin ( Environmental Issues)

Polar bear remains discovered at one of the islands of Northern Svalbard.
