NASA Astronauts Rock Colorful Hand-Painted Spacesuits

You know what a space suit is like. A large suit, a giant helmet and a backpack, all white. Well not in the Space Suit Art Project. This project was a collaboration between children battling cancer and NASA astronauts.

This photo released by NASA shows astronaut Kate Rubins aboard the International Space Station wearing the 'Courage" suit. The hand-painted spacesuit was decorated by child cancer patients at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

'Unity' was created at cancer hospitals in Germany, Russia, and Japan with collaboration from the European, the Russian and the Japanese Aerospace Space Agencies.

The first of the lot, 'Hope' is on display at the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston. It was stitched together from more than 600 painted art pieces created by patients, families and staff at MD Anderson.

These suits are a part of a program that aims to use art therapy for kids going through cancer treatment.

“Art is a creative way for patients to forget about their treatment. I’ve seen patients’ spirits lifted when they come to my art classes,” said Ian Cion, program director of the Arts in Medicine Program, to the MD Anderson Cancer Center.
