Meet the Odd Playmates of the Wild
Cameron and Zabu were rescued in 2004 from a roadside zoo in New England. The pair was fated for only one purpose — to one day breed in the hopes of producing exotic ligers.
This kind of breeding is actually animal abuse and it results in many genetic deformations. Both have since been neutered to prevent any incident of that sort.
Zabu is a 13-year-old While Siberian/Bengal Hybrid tigress who just loves swimming! At Big Cat Rescue she has plenty of space to play and run around.
After their rescue, they were still kept together in a large natural enclosure built specially for them. According to the staff, Cameron tends to doze most of the day whereas Zabu is extremely energetic and is always pestering him to play with her.
Despite their differences, they continue to be close and are popular with visitors. We're just happy that the two animals are finally safe from any further mistreatment or exploitation.
