Massive Lake Disappears Overnight

A 1400 hectare (14 square km/5.4 square mile) lake in Chile has mysteriously disappeared overnight. Pictures show that most of the lake Riesco near Aysen in Patagonia vanished overnight. There is an acute lack of information from any official sources so far, adding to the mystery.

The major geological faultline of Liquiñe-Ofqui of over 1,200 km that runs along the south of Chile is quite proximate to the lake. It is possible that the water body could have drained fully into this crevice. However no visible holes or fissures can be seen where the water could have gone.

Reportedly, there has been no seismic activity prior to the disappearance and the dormant volcanoes in the area were “stable” with no unusual activities. Another possible reason put forward is the drought brought about by the El Nino which has affected the area. The region this year has received an average rainfall only 34% of what is normal.

Well known for its quiet and transparent blue waters, lake Riesco was popular with vacationers - fishing enthusiasts and swimmers. Local residents are stymied by the sudden disappearance even as scientists and local officials are searching for answers.
