Its a Vampire Attack as Bats Take Over Aussie Town
The grey-headed flying foxes that can have a 3-foot wingspan have taken up residence in the coastal town since March this year. The species are listed as vulnerable and thus its not permitted to terminate them.
"The bats just came out of nowhere and they are just out of control. We just can't do anything because of them," harassed local residents told news outlets. Locals say the bats are noisy and are causing a huge mess after being hit with a wave of dirt and destruction.
Work is underway to eradicate thousands of bats after the tourist hotspot was declared a disaster area. The New South Wales state government has committed about $1.8m to help the local council to disperse the animals. Some ideas under consideration are smoke, noise and clearing the vegetation.
Experts believe that one in four of flying foxes in Australia have descended upon the town. Animal rights groups insist that the bats will move on of their own accord when ready.
