An Oddly Soothing Time Lapse Video - of Pavement

Yes, you read that right, it’s a video that’s showing a road being bituminized (being covered in bitumens, a byproduct of petroleum distillation) for waterproofing. A really mesmerizing areal video of trucks pouring bitumen on sand, covering it, and finally sealing the layer.

The Shire of Moora, a small Australian town with 2,000 residents, decided to document the process using a drone to film work done on a 4.9 km (3.06 miles) stretch of road. The road is of “chip-seal” construction, which is common in the Australian outback because of lack of availability of gravel and because of the sheer distances that workers need to cover in a short amount of time. In this case a $443,000 upgrade.

And the video soon went viral. It was put up on the town’s Facebook page on December 13, 2016 and went on to rack up 15 million views. It also helped the community’s Facebook page reach over 62,000 likes!

Enjoy at your leisure:

Perhaps people liked the video so much because it appeals to the perfectionist in them, the ones that love to watch time lapse videos of some things being built.

Nevertheless, it's as every bit as soothing as was promised.
