This Fish Will be Named After Obama!
The species was found by marine biologist, Richard Pyle while diving among deep-sea corals. It is only found within the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument in Hawaii.
Meet Tosanoides obama, the new fish species. And what an honor.
The president visits the region -- his birthplace -- often to draw attention to conservation efforts. Last week, President Obama announced the decision to expand the world's largest marine reservoir, the Hawaii's Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument.
Another reason for naming the fish after Obama was because “the spot on the males is reminiscent of President Obama's campaign logo," said the discoverer in a statement.
Sylvia Earle, renowned marine biologist and conservationist, and other scientists decided to name the fish after Obama which will also be gifted to him. A committee of scientists had no objection and the President also approved the proposal.
Obama can now boast that he is the namesake of two separate aquatic creatures. The Etheostoma Obama, a freshwater darter native to the Tennessee River was earlier named after him. Beats having a street or drab building named after you.
